The Kanji for Judgment 裁

1. Let me show you something interesting.
2. The Bible tells us that God created the first man and the first woman, Adam and Eve.
3. Every one of us are the descendants of these two people. 
4. And God placed them in the Garden of Eden. 
5. He gave them one command: they were free to eat from every tree except one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
6. But they desired that knowledge for themselves. They disobeyed God and ate the fruit.
7. At that moment they came to know good and evil. Sin entered the world, and mankind's relationship with God was broken.
8. Have you ever wondered what that knowledge of good and evil actually looks like?
9. The Bible answers that question in a surprising way.
10. I'd like to show you through the kanji for judgment 裁 that falls on people.
11. We begin by drawing a cross 十. 
12. This is the cross where Jesus Christ was crucified.
13. Next we draw the long horizontal line beneath it.
14. This represents the earth. 
15. Jesus did not die in a legend or a myth. 
16. He died here on earth at a specific place and at a specific moment in history.
17. Next we write the part that means garment 衣.
18. As Jesus hung on the cross, the Roman soldiers divided His clothing and cast lots for His garments, just as the Scriptures foretold. 
19. At that moment, Jesus prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing."
20. Finally, we write the spear 戈.
21. After Jesus had died, a Roman soldier pierced His side with a spear to confirm that He was dead.
22. Now look closely.
23. If we cover the part that means garment 衣, another character appears.
24. What remains is a character meaning a violent wound 𢦏.
25. When I look at this kanji through the story of John chapter 19, I see the knowledge of good and evil more clearly than anywhere else in the Bible.
26. I see the greatest evil mankind has ever committed. 
27. Human beings rejected the Son of God, mocked Him, nailed Him to a cross, gambled for His clothing, and pierced His side with a spear.
28. Yet at that very same moment, I also see the greatest good God has ever accomplished.
29. God placed the judgment that our sins deserved upon His own Son so that we could be forgiven and restored to Him.
30. The cross shows us both the depth of human sin and the greatness of God's love.
31. Every time I write the kanji 裁, I remember that what appeared to be history's greatest tragedy became God's greatest gift.
32. That is why this kanji always reminds me of the Gospel.

8. では、善悪を知るとは、実際にはどういうことなのでしょうか。
9. 聖書は、その問いに驚くべき方法で答えています。
10. 今日は、「人をさばく」の「裁」という漢字を通して、その答えをご紹介したいと思います。
11. まず、十字架を書きます。
12. これは、イエス・キリストがかけられた十字架です。
13. 次に、その下に長い横線を書きます。
14. この線は地上を表しています。
15. イエスは伝説や神話の中で死なれたのではありません。
16. 歴史の中のある時、この地上で、本当に十字架にかけられたのです。
17. 次に、「衣」の部分を書きます。
18. イエスが十字架にかけられていたとき、ローマ兵たちは聖書の預言のとおり、イエスの衣服を分け合い、その衣のためにくじを引きました。
19. その間、イエスはこう祈られました。「父よ。彼らをお赦しください。彼らは、自分が何をしているのか分かっていないのです。」
20. 最後に、槍を書きます。
21. イエスが息を引き取られた後、一人のローマ兵が、その死を確かめるために槍でその脇を突き刺しました。

29. 神は、私たちが受けるべき裁きを、ご自分の御子に負わせてくださいました。それは、私たちが罪を赦され、再び神との関係を回復することができるためです。
30. 十字架は、人間の罪の深さと、神の愛の偉大さの両方を私たちに示しています。
31. 私は「裁」という漢字を書くたびに、歴史上最大の悲劇と思われた出来事が、神の最も大きな贈り物となったことを思い出します。
32. だからこそ、この漢字はいつも私に福音を思い出させてくれるのです。
